Best Thing I'vd Ever Done

This is such a great organization. I walked through the doors 4 years ago to get into kickboxing, but did an intro for karate. It is the best thing that I have ever done, and the 1st commitment I had made in my 24 years on this planet. I've learned so much about myself and the world aroudn me. It helped me to not only gain physical skills and keep and shape, but to also gain mental skills. I am a more well rounded person for it. On top of all that, I gained a whole new community of friends. A safe place to go when I need support or to just goof around.

"Over a year ago, my professor used Martial Arts as metaphor to describe the intensities of the academic program I had just undertaken. "This is like an intellectual Black Belt," he said sternly, pounding his fist into the palm of his hand. "It won't be easy. You are going to have to work extremely hard for this degree."

Pressed by a persistent intuition, that it might be wise to put the professor's metaphor to use, I sought guidance from my son's AKKA teacher who heartily agreed that a committed practice of Karate would help to balance the rigorous requirments of the academy. My own thinking was that Karate might sharpen focus, amplify confidence and increase (physical and intellectual) endurance. Indeed, is has. But beneficial effects of Karate also spill over into added dimensions of life, at times in surprising ways. For instance, our AKKA instructor opened up alternative ways to think about common obstacles, such as fear, frustration and perceptions of inadequacy. Simply thinking about these matters in a different way sheds light on effective methods for moving forward in the face of them. There are as well, the constructive aspects of belonging to a community that is linked to an ongoing heritage of excellence. Our instructor and peers create a dynamic environment where encouragement is integrated with the continual challenge, "Go deeper!"

All all, there is a noticeable increase of strength and steadiness through life's rhythmic cycles of tension and triumph that attend the achievement of one's most-hoped-for aspirations.

Incidentally, I told my professor that I took his metaphor seriously and started martial arts. He said, "I finished my PhD the same year I earned my Black Belt. I can honestly say, I couldn't have done it wihtout Karate."

"I brought my three boys to this school nearly three years ago to develop their self discipline and confidence. I wanted them to be able to say no to anyone anytime (not me of course!) without fear. We've developed so much more. Now we have another family (and we chose this one!). In June, we'll have four black belts in our family, and as Mr. Williams says, "It's only the beginning." I believe it. Kenpo is a life style. So, get in state! Asah!" B H, Parent, Student, Life Member

"Our girls have trained at AKKA for over a year. The classes have taught our eight year old about respect, both for peers as well as for elders. Our fourteen year old has achieved a greater sense of self-esteem and confidence. It’s the activity they most enjoy!" D H, parent

"Since my six and seven year old daughters started karate, they’ve been working harder to achieve goals. Not only in karate but in school as well. Their attention and focus have greatly improved as a result of their involvement at AKKA." F C, parent

"AKKA Karate is the most rewarding activity in which my son has ever taken part. It has fostered honesty, responsibility, and determination that will guide him through life. The smile on his face that appears when it is time for class tells me one thing... AKKA will always be a huge part of our lives!" JT, parent

"I know why AKKA has top programs in the country... It’s the teachers that make the difference!" N W

"I really appreciate the way you work with the boys. With every class, you reinforce the importance of honesty, integrity, courtesy and hard work. What is most important, bowever, is the way you make it fun for them so they want to come to class." W C, parent

"To the AKKA Staff & Instructors: We appreciate all of you so much! You encourage and demand best effort, but are always positive and supportive. We can feel the positive and respectful tone of the school the minute we walk in the door. We are so glad we found you. Thank you for all you do on behalf of your students." T & M K, parents

"I like the feeling that in case a situation would occur that I would need to use it, I would be prepared to defend myself!" - CW - age 14

"It's the most wonderful family activity - as a parent, I am actively involved in learning Karate along with my kids, not just sitting on the sidelines watching. It's also the best mental and physical workout I've ever had in my life. No two classes are the same - it's not like taking boring aerobics classes - there is constant variety, which keeps my interest level very high. I would encourage all moms out there to consider joining Karate along with their kids. We all have a blast together!" - MC - age 40

"I like the fact that it teaches me self-defense so if someone tried to hurt me, I'd know what to do. I like my teachers, they are really nice and teach me something new each class." SL - age 11

"I love taking Karate because it gives me self-esteem and teaches me self-discipline. The instructors are some of the nicest people I've ever met and give me individual attention I need to succeed." EM - age 12

"I like all the nice teachers and it's fun taking the lessons with my family." MT - age 7
